2018 Mental Health Day: 36, 000 Patients Visit Neuro-Psychiatric Hospital Annually – Aro Provost

ABEOKUTA – The Provost of Neuropsychiatric hospital, Aro, Abeokuta, Dr. Timothy Adebowale has revealed that about 36,000 cases of out patients was recorded in the neuropsychiatric hospital, Abeokuta annually in Ogun state.

Dr. Adebowale explained that, majority of the neuro psychiatric cases recorded in the past one year in the hospital was majorly from Ogun State.

Dr. Adebowale enumerated that, about 50% of the patients are from Ogun state, about 19% from Oyo state, 15% from Lagos state while other states are represented by 1 – 0.1%.

Dr. Adebowale stated this on Wednesday at a press conference to commemorate this year’s World Mental Health Day with the theme; “Young People And Mental Health In A Changing World” held at NUJ Press Centre, Iwe-Iroyin House, Oke-Ilewo, Abeokuta, Ogun State.

He added that, 3,000 out patients cases was recorded monthly in the state including specialized service and excluding general medical practice in the community.

He said the total recorded cases in Lagos had reduced considerably because of the increase of recorded cases in Ogun.

His words “The catchment area of Aro is Nigeria. We have a monthly data of where our patients come from, at present 50 percent come from Ogun State, about 15 percent are from Oyo State.

“Lagos state used to rank second to Ogun State before but with Ogun State is increasing, Lagos is going down it’s as a result of the success of the campaign and enlightenment we give these people.

“In Lagos  there is Yaba psychiatric hospital, Lagos University Teaching Hospital so refer patients who come from Lagos to this hospital, but despite that, we still between 13 and 15 percent coming from Lagos. Most of the state across the country are being represented either by  1.0 percent every month we still receiver peopled and the reason is because we remain the final referrer centre for many conditions. Most people after they must have gone round they get referred to Aro.

“Ogun State has 50 percent of patients using Aro. We usually have between 250 and 300 new patients coming every month, we see 3,000 out patients everyday and annually we have about 36,000 patients are visiting our out patient clinic. These are for mental disorder treatment.

“Half of mental illness begins at the age of 14, I mean those that will develop mental health problem, half of them begin from age 14 also depression among Adolescents is another cause of mental disorder, suicide is also a second leading cause of death among people between the ages of 16 and 29.”
