ABEOKUTA – Ahead of 2019 general elections, the Executive Secretary, Obafemi Awolowo Foundation, Dr. Tokunbo Dosumu Awolowo has called on Nigerians to vote for credible candidates that will restore the confidence of Nigerians and provide good governance for the nation.
Dr. Dosumu Awolowo said undoubtedly, the most crucial moment in the lives of Nigerians is the 2019 elections, adding that, the next political dispensation is an opportunity to redefine the future of the country.
The former Ambassador to Netherland stated this on Thursday at a workshop organized by Yoruba Unity Forum held at Efunyela hall, Awolowo residence, Ikenne, Ogun State.
Speaking on the topic, “The Need For Opportunity In Confronting The 2019 Challenges”, Dr. Dosumu maintained that, the concept of good governance centers on the responsibility of governments and governing bodies to meet the needs of the masses as opposed to select groups in society.
She noted that, the role of political parties in fostering good governance was often overlooked, saying good governance appears elusive in countries where political parties are disconnected from voters and are dominated by the elite.
“Undoubtedly, the most crucial events in Nigeria in 2019, from the point of view of the topic under discussion, are the general elections. Those elections present to us yet another golden opportunity to reset our compass and choose our direction, and therefore our leaders, wisely.
“There are many reasons why we should pursue this course of action, these are; good governance, restructuring and the future.
“The Nigerian Federation will succeed and survive not by the wishful and thoroughly unscientific thinking of some Nigerians, but only to the extent to which we are able, through rationally thought-out constitutional arrangements, to contain the centrifugal forces at work and subordinate them permanently to the cohesive and centripetal influences of politico-economic union and togetherness.
“Clearly, then, we owe it to ourselves to engage political aspirants at all levels on their view vis-a-vis restructuring and make sure we vote for only those committed to the idea, because the process should commence without further delay,” Dr. Dosumu Awolowo averred.
