ABEOKUTA – Journalists in Nigeria have been charged to ensure adequate coverage and fair publicity for a successful electoral process.
The Ogun State Governor, Senator Ibikunle Amosun who gave the charge at the Turning of Sod of Tribune House, Isheri, said the success of every electioneering is determined by the roles played by the media .
Governor Amosun who was represented by his Deputy, Mrs. Yetunde Onanuga, emphasised on the need for media practitioners to check quacks in the field who are out to dent the image of journalism.
According to him, media, as the fourth estate of the realm, should wage war against dissemination of fake news and other unprofessional acts, which that could bring journalism into disrepute.
Congratulating the Awolowo family for sustaining the journalism legacy of their late patriarch, Chief Obafemi Awolowo, the Governor commended them for adding values to journalism practice for 69 years of its establishment.
In their remarks, the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, the Akarigbo and paramount ruler of Remoland, Oba Babatunde Ajayi and the Aare Onakakanfo of Yoruba land, Chief Gani Adams, commended the vision of late Chief Obafemi Awolowo, for setting up the newspaper, which was used as a tool for the nation’s independence, urging them to keep the flag flying.
Chairman of the African Newspapers of Nigeria, Dr. Tokunbo Awolowo Dosunmu in her remark, thanked all stakeholders who have stood with the publishing house over the years.
