2019: Methodist Prelate Caution Religious Leaders’ Against Financial Inducement From Politicians

ABUJA – The Prelate, Methodist Church of Nigeria, Dr. Samual Chukwuemeka Uche, has cautioned religious leaders in the country against collecting money and other forms of inducements from political parties, ahead of the 2019 general election.

This is just as the Catholic Bishop of Sokoto, Mathew Kukah, admonished religious leaders against hobnobbing with politicians.

Kukah noted that clerics must speak for the people, convey to political aspirants the messages and condition of the people, at the same time demand how the politicians planned to address the situation in the country.

While speaking at the Interfaith Initiative For Peace Conference organised by the Sultan of Sokoto, Sa’ad Abubakar and the Catholic Archbishop of Abuja, John Onaiyekan, the Prelate alleged that some clerics have been receiving money from People’s Democratic Party (PDP) All Progressives Congress (APC) and the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) to endorse their candidates in the forthcoming elections.

“I learnt that some religious leaders collected money from APGA, PDP, APC, life doesn’t depend on the amount of money you have. A religious leader should be able to manage poverty or affluence, we must be contended. Religious leaders should stop being lovers of money.”

He further stated that religion would not play a role in the choice of presidential candidates in 2019.

According to him, since that the presidential candidate of APC, President Muhammadu Buhari and the flag bearer of PDP, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar are both Muslims, Nigerians would care less about religious affiliation during in making their choices.

“Nigerians would vote for the candidates of the two big parties and they are both Muslims; We don’t care about their religion, we only want someone that can lead the nation well,” he stated.
