55 Egba Tertiary Institution Students Bag AG-Leventis Scholarship


…As Alake Boosts Fund With N1million

History was again made on Wednesday, March 17, 2021, as a total of 55 Egba Students in tertiary institutions were presented the AG Leventis Scholarships.

The scholarship covers various disciplines including Human and Veterinary Medicines, Education, Basic Sciences, Social Sciences, Agricultural Sciences, ICT and Pharmacy, among others.

This year’s award was different in many ways as the Alake of Egbaland, Oba Adedotun Gbadebo, added value to the century-old AG Leventis Egba Scholarship award Scheme as he swelled the fund with N1million donation.

This marked the first time in the history of the Scholarship Scheme when funds from persons or group, would be donated and added to the £1 million fund.

Justifying his exemplary gesture to increase the fund, Oba Gbadebo argued that it would be more appropriate if the Egbas would boost the Fund whose worth had been eroded over the years and the need to increase the number of beneficiaries.

The Alake, whose gesture received thunderous applause was joined by other Egbe Chiefs that also supported with various sums of money, emphasised that Egba should also be stakeholders in the philanthropic gesture of Chief A.G Leventis.

Oba Adedotun Gbadebo commended the Balogun of Egba Christians, Chief J.B Oke for working as a patriot to sustain the AG Leventis Scholarship Scheme Awards in his position as the Managing Director and later Chairman of Donor- company.

Alake lauded the commitment of Chief Oke, adding that whenever he was called on as occasion demands his response as an Egba Christian leader had been prompt.

Other Egba Chiefs that supported Alake’s innovative gesture that increased the fund with N500, 000 each was the Balogun Egba, Sikirullah Atobatele and Osi Egba, Bode Mustapha.
The Chairman Egba Science Foundation, Chief Soyooye also donated an undisclosed amount, while the Chairman of Egba General Title Chiefs, Chief Akanni Akinwale, also pledged collective financial support of the Group for the AG Leventis Scholarship Award Scheme.

Professor Ajao Adelekan, the Secretary of the Board, Awards Scheme explained that the 55 awardees were in various categories covering 29 undergraduates, 10 pursuing Masters degrees and another 6 for PhD degree.

Details of the other categories of beneficiaries are 11 undergoing a Higher National Diploma (HND) Courses.

Oba Gbadebo urged all the 55 awardees that were presented with the Awards and Certificates of the AG Leventis (Egba) Scholarship Award Scheme to justify the AG Leventis’ philosophy and dreams of assisting the youth to continue their forefathers’ leadership in education and professionalism in all spheres of human endeavours.

The Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the AG Leventis Scholarship Award, who is also the Chairman and Founder of the Egba Science Foundation Scheme, Chief Olatunde Abudu, in a goodwill message delivered by a Board member of the Leventis Scholarship Scheme, Chief G. O Soyooye commended the Alake’s quality leadership of the Egba Community, especially his love for the education of the youth.

Besides, the former Managing Director and later Chairman of the AG Leventis, Chief J. B. Oke also appreciated the Alake and the Board members of the Scheme for their unflinching commitment to the welfare, dreams and projections for the younger generations.

Chief Oke admonished the awardees to consider the Leventis Scholarship Scheme as a call to reciprocity to reenact what Mr AG Leventis epitomises.
He urged them and upcoming Egba sons and daughters to enrol in academic disciplines that would make them practically useful to themselves and the society at large.

He commended the Board for their impeccable method of selection.
The presentation ceremony was witnessed other notable Egba chiefs like the Bantun, Chief Kehinde Sofenwa and Aare Baaroyin, Chief Executive Layi Labode as well as a member of the Board of the AG Leventis Egba Scholarship Award Scheme, Princess Adebisi Soboyejo.
