The final selection and appointment of the new Vice Chancellor of the Alex Ekweme Federal University, Nkwo, Alike, was one of the toughest in the country.
This was disclosed to the Alake, the Chancellor, by Professor Emeritus Niml Briggs, the Pro Chancellor if the University.
Professor Emeritus Niml Briggs told the Alake that virtually all those who applied were on the face value qualified and it was a Herculaneum Task in pruning the number down.
The Pro Chancellor said he was not surprised because the University had been lucky to have a best academic, physical and human capital foundation, in spite of its relative younger age.
Professor Briggs appreciated the Federal Government for giving the FUNAI the Alake as the Chancellor, who had in larger measures had been contributing to the rapid growth and development of the institution.
The Pro Chancellor said that a FUNAI delegation wad in Abeokuta to visit the Chancellor to receive blessings and thank him for the leadership
Also it was to formally report to the Chancellor, some major new appointments, including his own as Pro Chancellor and Chairman of Council.
He said even though 87 persons applied for the post of new VC , God had helped with choice of Prof Sunday Elom, as the best of all.
He described the Alake as a rare leader, whose impacts were being felt beyond Egbaland and FUNAI.
Also speaking on the immediate past Vice Chancellor, Professor Briggs said Chinedum Nwajuba was a consistent and hardworking leader, whose invaluable contributions would be enduring.
He noted that 26 February 2011 was foundation day, and
Prof Ibidapo Obe and Chinedum Nwajuba had laid the foundation for the new VC to fly.
Prof Chinedum Nwajuba, the immediate Past VC described the Chancellor, Alake, as a God given.
Professor Nwajuba argued that FUNAI was created by God specially, late Ibidapo Obe, Pro VC Niml Briggs, Alake, and others of that calibre, were Divinely selected and send to the institution.
He disclosed that his working closely with Alake for five years was a most rewarding part of his life and working career.
He said FUNAI was among the few serious Universities in Nigeria and that he would be missing Alake.
He however said he would endeavor to be coming to Abeokuta for the Alake’s Birthdays on September 14 every year.
In his remarks, the Alake and Paramount Ruler of Egbaland, Oba Adedotun Gbadebo expressed joy in welcoming Prof Emeritus Niml Briggs, the Pro Chancellor and Chairman of Council and members of FUNAL entourage.
Oba Adedotun Gbadebo said he was very pleased but not surprised that Happy to have Prof Sunday Elom was appointed new VC because he had been consistently been committed academically, administratively, loyal to his bosses and Godly.
The Alake also described Professor Chinedum Nwajuba as a father, a teacher and an administrator who dedicated his life to the welfare and development of the younger and future generation.
The Alake said although FUNAI and himself were going to miss him physically, the Chancellor argued that Nwajuba’s excellent works would be enduring.
In his remarks, the new VC, Prof Sunday Elom, said a solid foundation had been laid for him adding that he was just going to add value and oil the wheel of progress, whose foundation had already been laid.
Prof Wole Soyinka, the Nobel Laureate and a close friend of the Alake was also around to share the moments recalling that he did his some of his researches as an undergraduate at Abakaliki, the Ebonyi capital of today.
Members from the Academics and Traditional circles were present at the occasion.
They included Professor Felix Salako of FUNAAB, Professor Peace Babalola if Chrisland University and their Registrars.
