The Egba’s foremost Cultural body, the Abeokuta Club, has honoured one of its members and and former Minister of Works, Rear Admiral Olufemi Olumide, who died two weeks ago at the age of 82 as a result of brief illness.
The event which took place at the Ultra Millennium Hall Auditorium of the Abeokuta Club, Ibara, Abeokuta, on Thursday, August 27, 2020, was organised in strict adherence to the Covid19 Safety protocols.
Speaking at the occasion, the President of Abeokuta Club and the Asiwaju Onimoero of Egbaland, Chief (Engr) Tokunbo Odebunmi, lauded the exemplary qualities of the late Elder of the Club a former member of the Federal Executive Council, the highest ruling body in Nigeria. Engineer Tokunbo Odebunmi stated that late Admiral Olumide was an active and humanistic person.
Engr Odebunmi also disclosed that late Admiral Olufemi Olumide was very fond of the Club and was supportive of her in all aspects of her endeavours.
The Club President commended the family for the honour bestowed on the Club, urging them to continue to uphold the good name of their late father.
Chief Fatai Lawal, the Secretary to the Elders of the Club, paying homage to the late Admiral Olufemi Olumide, noted that he did a lot of good works in the Club and to people that surrounded him.
The Elder also prayed that God would continue to strengthen his family and allow his gentle soul to rest in peace.
The General Secretary of the Abeokuta Club, Chief Sesan Okutoro, delivering vote of thanks, stated that the Late Admiral was a man of integrity and his service to humanity was beyond comparison.
Chief Okutoro described him as a symbol of tolerance and mirth, adding that he was never self centred, rather he loved to support the people with that which God has blessed him.
Chief Okutoro also appreciated the members of Rear Admiral Olumide Family that allowed to Club to formally honour him and noted that they had honoured the Egbaland.
Members of the family of the deceased appreciated the Abeokuta Club for the honour and hospitality they had shown to the Olumides and assured that they would sustain their late father’s legacies.
The widow, the children and siblings of the late Admiral Olumide, were also present at the occasion.

The Alake and Paramount Ruler of Egbaland was represented at the occasion by the Aare Baaroyin of Egbaland, Chief Layi Labode.
Other members and notable dignitaries present at the occasion include, Vice President Dr Adeola, Justice Demola Bakre, Justice Bode Popoola, Alhaji Fatai Lawal, Professor Adekunle, Chief OgoOluwa Bankole, Balogun Bayo Shoyoye, Chief Ola Sobande, Engineer Vaughan and others.
