Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun has offered the best graduating student of the Federal Polytechnic, Ilaro, Miss. Akintola Modupe, who graduated with a Cumulative grade of 3.90 out of 4.00, an automatic employment, immediately after the mandatory service year.
Speaking at the 40th anniversary and 19th Convocation ceremony of the institution, held at the school premises, Prince Abiodun said the decision was to promote excellence in academic performance.
He commended the management of the institution for sustaining quality academic operation over the years, noting that the new set of graduates would join the league of qualified human resources for the continued development of the State.
The Governor said it was important that schools, parents, government, and other stakeholders support combination of the school curriculum with skills acquisition to meet developmental needs of the society.
He noted that his administration would continue to give education the priority it deserves by providing qualitative education for students at all levels.
Our administration remains committed to give education the priority it deserves. We remain committed to providing qualitative education for children in the State, irrespective of their location, gender or social status. Our belief is that, a well educated citizenry will not only be useful to his or herself but also contribute positively to the development of our dear State”, the Governor said.
He used the occasion to inform the gathering that his administration has been able to resolve the headlong issues at Moshood Abiola Polytechnic, Abeokuta and Tai-Solarin College of Education (TASCE), Omu, Ijebu, adding that the State Government had set up a delivery unit for education in the State.
Commenting on the conferment of honorary fellowship of the institution on three notable citizens of the country, the Governor acknowledged that the awards were in recognition of their various contributions to the development of humanity, saying the gesture was a call to higher service and more responsibilities.
Earlier in his welcome address, the Rector of the Polytechnic, Arc. Olusegun Aluko, stated that the institution which was celebrating its 40 years of establishment and 19th convocation ceremony had gone through a tough period to earn its present state of excellence.
He said the awardees including; the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi, Olu of Ilaro and paramount ruler of Yewaland, Oba Kehinde Olugbenle and the Otunba Olu of Ilaro, Dr. Anthony Ibikunle were instrumental to the establishment of Music, Arts and Design Departments of the institution.
Aluko assured that the institution would not rest on its oars, as plans were underway to introduce twelve new programmes and award of degree certificates, in affiliation with two reputable Nigerian Institutions, urging the graduands to add skills to their paper qualifications through various entrepreneurship programmes.
In his address, the Visitor to the institution, President Muhammadu Buhari, who was represented by Dr. Joel Ojo, said that the ceremony was a time to take stock of the institution’s challenges and reward excellence, adding that the Federal Government was committed to growing the sector by providing fund through Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFUND).
While congratulating the graduands, the President urged them to be creative and embrace the role of change agent, to make the country a better place, calling on the Alumni to embark on meaningful projects by a way of endowment fund for the development of the polytechnic.
