The Lisabi Festival is an annual fiesta that commemorates the great warrior; Lisabi who heroically delivered the Egba people from captivity.
The Icon is celebrated every year in order to encourage more of such patriotic and heroic acts among the Egba indigenes
This year marks the 34th celebration of its kind in Egbaland, and the fiesta is to run through 24th of February, till 1st of March,2020.
The festival had kicked off with a press conference which took place at the Ake Palace Auditorium on the 17th of February, 2020
During the Press Conference, the Alake and Paramount ruler of Egbaland, Oba (Dr.) Michael Adedotun Aremu Gbadebo unveiled a New City Hall project to be built on seven hectares of land along Sam Ewang Extension, Abeokuta which is to occupy 3,500 seater banquet hall, a library, a restaurant, a hotel, a Sports Section and an administrative block
On Saturday, 22nd of February, 2020, the New Abeokuta City Hall project to replace the 90 year old Centenary Hall was launched at Sam Ewang Extension, Abeokuta; prominent Egba citizens within the land and around the globe, Ogun and Lagos State Government showed up to contribute to the great development
At 6am Prompt on Monday, the 24th of February, 2020, there was booming of guns at the Olumo Rock, followed by the cleaning of each Palace ground by Youths at 8am and also Public Mobilization by Women and youths in a Carnival-like procession with float, by 8:15am at the Ake Palace
Then, a Quiz Competition Final at the Centenary Hall by 9am, at noon, the Lisabi Football Competition Semi-Final at Abeokuta Grammar School, Idi-Aba followed by a Camp Scout Fire at the Ake Palace by 6pm.
On Tuesday, the 25th, there would be opening of Exhibition/Cultural display at Ake Palace by 9am, Traditional AYO Game Competition Final and distribution of prizes at Ake Palace Summer Garden which would be sponsored by Grand Oak,makers of the traditional prayer drink; Semans Schnapps
At noon, there would be a Debate Competition Final at the Centenary Hall followed by a Children Social Programme by Egba Youths at Ake Palace Ground
The theme of this year’s edition of Lisabi Festival is Culture; A Panacea For Sustainable Socio-Economic Development of Egbaland, which will be deliberated on in a Seminar scheduled by 10am at the Centenary Hall on Wednesday, 26th of February followed by the Lisabi Football Competition Final at Abeokuta Grammar School, Idi-Aba, starting by 2pm
On Thursday, the 27th, the Obas, Chiefs, Baales, eminent personalities, youths and other people would proceed to Igbo Lisabi by 9am, at the same time, there would be Free Health Screening at the Centenary Hall: Courtesy of Royalty Club of Egbaland which would end by 4pm, when a Youth Praise Concert would start at the frontage of the Ake Palace
Meanwhile, at 2pm, a visit to the Lisabi Hero of the year would commence, this edition’s Hero of the year is Chief (Alhaji) Yesufu Moyosore Abudu; Seriki of Muslim Council of Nigeria.
All participants would visit Olumo Rock on Friday, where there would be traditional prayer on top of the rock and rendering of Egba Anthem followed by display of Cultural groups and at the same time, the Free Health Screening would resume at the Centenary Hall by 9am and end by 4pm
There would be a Jumat Thanksgiving at Central Mosque, Kobiti by 1pm, then, Traditional Wrestling at Ake Palace by 4pm followed by a Squash Clinic Tournament at Ake Palace Squash Complex; Courtesy of Royalty Club of Egbaland
Saturday, the 29th of February is the Grand Finale of the 2020 Lisabi Festival and the Ogun State Govenor, His Excellency, Prince Dapo Abiodun, MFR is the Special Guest of Honour for this day.
The Grand Finale would kick off by 9am with Special Chieftaincy Conferment at premises of June 12 Cultural Centre, Kuto, Abeokuta (Venue of African Drums Festival) and by 11am, there would be Woro dance beginning from the sectional basis amid drumming and dancing, ending at the same venue
By 12 noon, there would be Cultural displays lasting for 2 hours, then Homage by Clubs, Associations, Chiefs, Baales, and other groups followed by a Presentation of Bursary Award by Egba National Association (USA/Canada), and Presentation of Football Competition Prizes from 3-4pm, Congratulatory/Goodwill Messages and Speeches with entertainment will follow
The 2020 Lisabi Festival will end with a Thanksgiving Service at the Cathedral of St. Peter, Ake, Abeokuta by 10am on the 1st of March, 2020
