The Alake and Paramount Ruler of Egbaland, Oba Adedotun Aremu Gbadebo, CFR, Okukenu IV, has appealed that the Federal College of Education, Osiele, Abeokuta, should be recommended to the Federal Government for upgrade to University status.
Oba Gbadebo made the appeal while receiving the Federal Government’s Visitation Panel to the College, at the Ake Palace, Abeokuta, on Tuesday, May 4, 2021.
The Alake gave the qualifications for the upgrade of the institution as including, large expanse of land for immediate and future development, existing educational structures and other take off facilities, and the very conducive atmosphere as engendered by the ever friendly Egba Community.
Oba Adedotun Gbadebo also reassured the Presidential Visitation Panel that the 45 year old Federal Institution had paid its due in terms of provision of professional teachers and offering of post graduate and in service programmes to enhance advancement of civil servants and others.
The Alake pointed out that not many universities had as many facilities as already existing in the FCE, Osiele.
The Egba Apex Monarch disclosed that Education in Egbaland is the number one industry, which made the area as a Mecca for those Nigerians who wanted to read science, to come to Abeokuta, some years ago.
The Alake therefore passionately appealed to the Visitation Panel, to strongly recommend the Federal College of Education, Osiele for upgrade to a University
The Alake also described the Acting Provost, Dr Soyele, as a hard working Professional and Academician who had been paying his dues to the growth and the development of the FCE, praying that he be made the substantive Provost as soon as possible.
He further urged the Panel to take time to visit the attractive locations in Ogun State such as the Adire Mall, the Olumo Rock, Abeokuta Golf Course and many others.
In his introduction of the Visitation Panel, the Acting Provost, Dr. Soyele, told the Alake that, the paying of courtesy visit on the Alake, was the immediate priority request of the Visitation Panel, led by Professor Charles Uche Ugwuanyi, to register the great respect the Visitation Panel and the College had for the Alake and Egba Hosts.
Dr Soyele further disclosed that Alake of Egbaland had very deep and sustainable interest in the growth and development of the FCE, Osiele, adding that this was why a befitting structure had been named after the Egba Paramount Monarch, and is to be commissioned before the ending of May, 2021.
The Acting Provost also said one of the main reasons for the visitation is to enhance the existing relationship between the school and the society.
He added that the Chairman, Visitation Panel, Professor Charles Uche and his team were to investigate whether there’s cordiality between the town and gown.
In his remarks, the Chairman of the Visitation Panel, Professor Charles Uche, told the Alake that a major part of the Visitation Panel’s assignment was to assess the relationships between the Institution and the people as represented by the Alake and Paramount Ruler of Egbaland.
Professor Charles disclosed that the Panel was not an Inquisition, rather it was to assess whether the investments of the Federal Government on the College, students’ welfare, academic growth, which invariably might lead to the recommendation of the College to be upgraded to a full fledged university, was intact.
The Visitation Panel leader disclosed that the group was on a positive mission to add value to the institution.
Other members of the Panel present were Dr Emma Asagha, Dr Oluwaseun Osiboye, Mr Matthew Salifu, and Mr Usotoh Dickson.
In the entourage of the Acting Provost Dr R. A. Soyele, was, Dr G. A. Adebayo – Registrar, Mr Bola Adesina – Information Director, Mr Anthony Ogunleye – Protocol, and Mrs Yemisi – Information Officer.
