-Fola Thompson from Abeokuta
Following the directive made recently by the Hon. Minister of Education, Alhaji Adamu Adamu over the scrapping of management courses in specialized Universities across the Country the Alake and Paramount Ruler of Egbaland, Oba Adedotun Aremu Gbadebo has requested for the reversal of the directive.
The Egba Monarch in his letter to the President Muhammed Buhari, pointed out the demerits and disquiet the directive had brought about in Nigeria tertiary institutions, especially in all the areas where such Universities are located
He disclosed that the uncalled for scenario had led to overwhelming protests and complaints from stakeholders from the Academia, business community, parents and other concerned within and outside the country.
His Majesty cited an instance of the Federal University of Abeokuta, which established the college of management science (COLMAS) in 2011 in response to the directive of former President, Dr Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, to all specialized Federal Universities to diversify their academic programs to enhance access to Higher Education in the Country with a perspective to accommodating the teeming prospective University candidates.
The Alake, reminded the Hon. Minister of Section 2(3) of decree No 48,1992 (as amended) of the Act: to develop and offer academic and professional programs leading to the award of diploma, first degree, post graduate research and higher degrees with emphasis on planning, adaptive, technical, maintenance development and productive skills in Agriculture, Agricultural engineering with the aims of producing socially mature persons with capacity to improve on those disciplines and develop new ones, but also to contribute to scientific transformation of Agriculture in Nigeria.
In the letter, Oba Adedotun Gbadebo stated that the Minister of Education’s directive if implemented, would put on hold the host communities economic activities across the nation which they were benefiting in the area of Agriculture.
The Paramount Ruler of Egbaland stressed the massive supports of COLMAS to FUNAAB, MAKURDI and UMUDIKE in boosting the economic activities of the host communities and recreation of poor people’s settlements close to the universities.
He also emphasized that offering of courses in Management Sciences by Federal University of Agriculture had no negative impact on the effectiveness of the University to train students in the area of its core mandate. He cited examples of countries such as; the US, Europe, China and South Africa which run courses outside their core mandates in line with the current realities.
Alake then called on the Federal Government to retain and continue the various Management Courses along side the core Agriculture as a choice of career.
