ABEOKUTA – The Alake and Paramount Ruler of Egbaland, Oba Adedotun Aremu Gbadebo has called on both federal and state governments to set aside a day as public holiday for traditional religion worshipers.
Newsflagship recalls that, Osun State Government had declared Monday as Isese Day to allow adherents of traditional religion to come together for the annual celebration.
But Oba Gbadebo noted that, Christian and Islamic faithfuls shared nothing less than 13 days between the two religions as public holidays for their special celebrations, while none was granted to the traditional followers.
He pointed out that, Nigerian Constitution recognised freedom of religion and association, adding that the traditional worshipers should be given due recognition as also believed in oneness of God whom they called Orunmila or Olodumare.
“The fact that they believed that their God could only be approached through the intermediary of the 201 gods, should be their personal concern and should not shut them out of government facilities.”
Oba Gbadebo noted that, developed countries like the Caribbeans and latin American recognised the traditional worshipers and grant them public holidays for Isese Day.
The Alake who said he deliberately fixed the New Yam festival on same day as Isese, was to give them sense of belonging to worship their gods.
Oba Gbadebo therefore, advised all religions to be tolerant of one another, in order to promote peace and unity in the country.
