People in Egbaland would start to eat new Yam as from Thursday, August 20, 2020.
It is on this day that the Alake and Paramount Ruler of Egbaland, Oba Adedotun Aremu Gbadebo, would officially and traditionally eat pounded yam produced by fresh yam for the first time.
According to the Yoruba tradition, no one eats the new yam until annual thanksgiving Prayers would have been offered to the Almighty God by the traditional ruler of the area.
A statement from the Ake Palace disclosed that this year’s Isese and new Yam’s Festivals would be celebrated at the Ake Palace in total compliance with Covid19 health and safety protocols.
It is for this reason that the usual homage on the eve, that is, Wednesday 19th of August, 2020, by 6pm would be restricted to only very few Chiefs and Princes.
The Festival Day Proper, which is the first day of the year in Yoruba Calendar, would feature prayers for Egbaland, Ogun State, and Nigeria, at 12 noon, by Isese Traditional Worshippers led by the Chairman, Chief Ifaseun Idowu, and other 19 members from Egbaland.
At 2pm, the Alake would visit the Iyamode sanctuary, at the Ake Palace foregrounds, for more prayers and formal declaration of the eating of new Yam.
The Marketing Director of Grand Oaks, Makers of Seaman’s Schnapps, Southwest region, Mr Bojuwade Adebowale, told Newsflagship that Seaman’s Schnapps products being the prayer drinks, would continue to support traditional institutions to promote peace, progress, and prosperity for the Egbas and Nigerians in general.
On behalf of the Grand Oak Management and Staff, Mr Bojuwade Adebowale congratulated the Alake and people of the Egba Nation on the occasion of New Yam Festival and Isese Day, noting that the Seaman’s Schnapps brands have additionally been prayer drinks before and since Oba Gbadebo began his reign in 2006.
