ABEOKUTA – The leadership of the National Association of Nigeria Students has ordered students across tertiary Institutions in the country to shutdown all campuses on Monday, 19th November.
This order was issued by the association through it national spokesperson Comrade Azeez Adeyemi, in protest against the continuous refusal of the Federal government to acede the request of the Academic Staff Union of Universitirs (ASUU) which has caused the protest to linger.
Comrade Adeyemi who spoke at the secretariat of the Ogun State Nigeria Union of Journalists described the ruling government as a government of lies and crooks.
The spokesperson also declared that the shutdown will be enabled through a lecture boycott enjoining students union presidents across the country to stage a street protest across the country.
Adeyemi also attacked the governor of Ekiti state, Dr. Kayode Fayemi for his comment on the hugeness of Professors salary describing the comment of the governor as sad.
His words, “It is sad to hear the governor of Ekiti state saying that s professor is earning more than a sitting Governor. The point is that Governor Kayode Fayemi is carried away by masses tax and public funds he enjoys,he also failed to read between the lines to hear the demands of ASUU.
“NANS will like to enlighten Governor Kayode Fayemi and the Nigerian government that ASUU is not asking for too much by demanding for revitalization of public universities and the issue of University Staff Schools, among many others things.
“NANS is however saying that the government needs to create a conducive environment for learning and research because this is where the strength of the country rest on.”
“The Nigeria government is running a lies and crooks, the recommendation of United Nations for any country that want to develop and compete on education is 26 percent (as recommended by UNESCO) of the country budget. In the last administration,it was 10percent budgetary allocation while the government of the day has reduced it to 7percent in the 2018 budget.
“Some days ago,the National Assembly resolved to slash the budget on education amongst other ministries budget to fund the budget of the 2019 election. NANS condemns this in totality, we see this as a deliberate attack on Nigerian Students,as such is criminal. He added
“NANS however under it’s President,Comrade Daniel’s on Bamidele Akpan (GCNS) condemn this act in strong terms and no other mechanism than to shut down all habitat of criminal government by making our problems a social problem.
The National PRO however declared that “since the ultimatum given to FG expired yesterday night, and the government still not cooperating to the voice of the common man. Come Monday,we shall stage a rally simultaneously across the states of the federation at the state capitals respectively, thereby becomes a national struggle.
“The President of NANS has declared Monday 19th of November, as lecture free day for all Tertiary Institutions in Nigeria.”
The Association warned the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) stressing that the association is watching the activities of the commissioner closely adding that any attempt by choice of schools to either close or open during this period will not be allowed, it would be intellectually and metaphysically combated, if the schools pooling units are not allowed to function in the capacity for which they were created.
