Six of the staff and family members of University of Abuja have been released by their abductors, Daily Independent has gathered.
Their release was confirmed by the Chairperson of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) University of Abuja Chapter Dr Kasim Umar on Friday morning.
He however failed to give details regarding whether ransom was paid to the kidnappers.
In a telephone chat with our reporter, Umar simply said: “The Kidnapped staff of the University of Abuja have been released.
“We appreciate the federal government and security agencies for securing the release of our colleagues.
“The released lecturers and family members are currently undergoing medical checks to ascertain their well being”.
He however noted that security at the University has been beefed up to forestall recurrence.
Recall that an unspecified number of gunmen stormed the staff quarters of the University on Tuesday, abducting six persons. Among them were two Professors, a Deputy Registrar and three family members.
The local ASUU chapter of the University had issued a 48hours ultimatum to security operatives to secure their release or else they would continue to boycott classes.
