Lagos State University ((LASU), on Wednesday, made strong showing in the Young University Rankings 2021 published by the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings.
Nigeria had only two entries in the 2021 Young World University Rankings. On the second place is the Covenant University (CU), Canaanland, Ota, Ogun State.
On the table, LASU on 149th came first in Nigeria with 23, 421 students, with a 33.9% student/staff ratio and female/male students at 44:56.
Covenant University had 8,601 students strength, staff/student at 16 percent and 43:57 for female/male students.
However, both universities scored zero under the international students’ column on the table. University of Kwazulu-Natal, South Africa occupied the number one spot in Africa on 61.
The Times Higher Education Young University Rankings list the world’s best universities that are 50 years old or younger. The 2021 ranking includes 475 universities, up from 414 in 2020.
Established in 1983, Lagos State University is a public university in Nigeria, operating three major campuses, namely: Ojo, Ikeja and Epe.
As the only state university in Lagos State, the non-residential university has over 35,000 students enrolled full time in courses at diploma, undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
The Ojo campus is the main campus and the location of the central administration. It houses the faculties of arts, education, law, management sciences, science and social sciences, school of transport, school of communication, centre for environment studies and sustainable development, centre for general Nigerian studies, centre for planning studies, information and communication technology centre, online and distance learning and research institute and centre for entrepreneurial studies.
The Lagos State University Epe campus, a fully residential campus on a former military barrack, is even larger than the main campus. It is home to the faculty of engineering, the school of agriculture and the institute for organic agriculture and green economy. The faculty of engineering includes four departments, namely mechanical engineering, electronic and computer engineering, chemical and polymer engineering, and aeronautic engineering.
Covenant University is a private Pentecostal Christian University, which has been operating with official status since 2002 in Ota, Nigeria. It has had a rapid rise in reputation in the decade and a half it has been operating. The Nigerian Universities Commission named it the best private university in Nigeria in its 2018 rankings and the 6th best university overall.
