In its move to ensure that vulnerable and less privilege benefit maximally from the Federal Government Social Intervention Programme stimulus package, Ogun State government has re-engaged the National Cash Transfer Office (NCTO), Abuja, through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), for the State to fully actualise the programme.
The State Commissioner for Special Duties and Inter-Governmental Affairs, Barr. Femi Ogunbawo, made this known during a sensitisation workshop on National Social Safety Net Programme (NASSP) and Agenda for Household Uplifting Programme (HUP), held in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.
Ogunbawo who was accompanied by the Permanent Secretary designate in the Ministry, Mr. kehinde Onasanya, expressed optimism that the House Hold Uplifting programme (HUP), when fully implemented would give relief to the vulnerable groups in the society.
The Commissioner pointed out that the inability of the past administration to key into the HUP in 2016 had deprived the State of its attendant benefits, adding that the passion of the present administration of Prince Dapo Abiodun for the less privilege, especially the vulnerable groups necessitated the development.
“When this government came on board, the Governor was worried of the deprivation and instructed that we take all necessary steps to take advantage of the scheme. We expect that in few weeks’ time, the State will start to benefit immensely”, he said.
Ogunbanwo expressed gratitude to the Governor for giving the Ministry the necessary backing to pursue the poverty amelioration programme, describing the workshop as necessary to clarify the roles and responsibilities of various stakeholders in the implementation process of the scheme.
Earlier in her remarks, the National Coordinator, Conditional Cash Transfer, Dr. Temitope Sinkaiye said the scheme was designed to improve livelihood of the poor in Nigeria and enhance the economy of States.
Sinkaiye added that the workshop was geared towards orientating the would-be personnel involved in the cash transfer on their roles, responsibilities and how the programmes would be implemented, explaining that it would not only promote synergy among stakeholders at the State level, but also enable the focal person implement in accordance with the stipulated guidelines.
