Former Super Eagles assistant coach, Joe Erico has warned the Golden Eaglets and their technical crew not to take their opponents in the opening match of this year’s FIFA Under-17 World Cup, Hungary for granted.
In a sports Radio programme monitored in Lagos on Wednesday, Erico said that Manu Garba must not take Hungary for granted, as they were current European U-17 champions, and will enter the game with a burning desire to pull off a huge shock and dent Nigeria’smammothcredentials in the teenagers’ competition.
With that in mind, Erico added that all Nigerians have to wish the Golden Eaglets well, in order to see them come through unscathed in their first match and then go on to win every other game in the championship, to get a record-extending sixth Cadet Mundial title for Nigeria.
“Nigeria has a good record in this competition, so we can expect a good outing from this team. They have prepared well, they got some good results in their friendly matches, but now they have to face the real competition.
“They should avoid underrating any opponent, especially starting against Hungary, but I am sure the coach knows what is expected of him and his players. We can only help by wishing them well and let’s see how it eventually ends,” he said.
He also charged the team to ensure they keep Nigeria’s strong tradition going in the FIFA U-17 World Cup, and added that he is wishing the squad all the best in the upcoming championship.
It was gathered that the Golden Eaglets’ will begin their campaign in this year’s edition of the competition with their opening match against Hungary this Saturday in Goiânia, Brazil.
