Ogun APC Chairman, Chief Derin Adebiyi

ABEOKUTA – Barely, 24-hour to the Presidential primaries of the All Progressives Congress (APC), the Ogun State chapter on Thursday accepted to the National Working Committee directive to make use of direct primaries as a mode of selecting party’s candidates for next election come 2019.

NEWS FLAGSHIP recalled that the party’s national leadership has approved direct primary for the state.

But, the party in the state led by his Chairman, Derin Adebiyi, during a stakeholders meeting in Abeokuta on September 20, insisted on using indirect mode of primaries to elect his candidates for the 2019 elections.

Meanwhile, the Thursday’s meeting in Abeokuta with party’s stakeholders from all the wards, Adebiyi urged all the party faithful to move out enmass and cast their vote for President Muhammadu Buhari.

He said the party has received the registers from the party’s headquarters but still awaiting the membership cards, saying the national leadership has promised to provide it.

Adebiyi explained that the earlier agreement to go for indirect primaries was based on non availability of the registers and membership cards.

His words: ” We have the registers now but still waiting for the membership cards. The registers have the picture and name of all the members at different wards so you should go to your wards and vote President Buhari. That is what he said he wants.

” We are sponsors of President Buhari, please you (stakeholders) should mobilise your people and let’s show we are on ground”.

“We know ourselves at every ward and polling unit. I am sure nobody who is not APC member will come out to participate in the primaries. And in case you caught any impositor, please don’t beat anybody, just hand him or her to the security agents,” Adebiyi said.

He assured the party faithful that all logistics would be provided for the smooth conduct of the primaries.

Also, a member of the NWC, Alhaji Tajudeen Bello agreed with the State Chairman, saying the state would continue to lead by example.

He stated that state is the home democracy, saying the state is leading other state in all areas.

He urged members to conduct themselves peacefully in the primaries.

The party’s decision in the state may not be unconnected to a High court judgement sitting in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, has restrained the Ogun State executive of the All Progressives Congress (APC), from conducting indirect primaries for all elective positions in the state.

Two members of the party, Comrade Adeniyi Clement and Prince Timothy Olapade, had approached the court over alleged exclusion of members from the ward, local government and state congresses of the state chapter held on the 5th, 12th and 19th of May, 2018.

In the Suit No. FCT/HC/BW/CV/133/2018, the party’s National Chairman, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, Ogun APC Chairman, Chief Derin Adebiyi, and Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), were joined as the first, second, third and fourth defendants respectively.

But in his ruling, Justice O. A Musa gave an order that the party in the state should not conduct primary in the indirect mode against the directive of the NWC that direct primary mode should be conducted.

Musa granted three of the reliefs sought by the applicants, by restraining the defendants either by themselves, agents, privies or any officer under their employment or direction from conducting the governorship primaries in any other manner other than the direct primary option as issued by the NWC at its meeting of 24th September, 2018 pending the hearing of the motion on notice.
