ABEOKUTA – The Federal Government has been urged to accord priority attention to the agricultural sector and technology to lead its economic diversification drive in the bid to revamp the economy.
The Ogun East Senatorial Candidate, Green Party of Nigeria, Armstrong ‘Tope Akintunde gave the advice on Saturday during 33rd Akesan Day Celebration held in Iperu area of Ogun State.
Armstrong who spoke on the state of the economy in an interview with journalists, said agriculture and technology were not given the deserved attention by successive governments in the past.
The graduate of Agronomy from Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta said that the country had ample opportunities to diversify the economy through agricultural produce and technology but had neglected the call and was now paying for it.
He attributed the present economic quagmire to mismanagement, bad leadership and corruption, describing President Muhammadu Buhari’s corruption fight as a “Sham”.
He said, the level of corruption under the present administration has drastically increased compare to previous governments.
He said, “For me, this present administration in my assessment, has totally failed. There has been increase in unemployment rate compare to the last administration.
“In terms of corruption, I will say this administration is the most corrupt administration. This is because if you say you are fighting corruption, Nigerians must have seen success recorded so far. When last did you hear about the whistle-blower policy? How many people have been convicted so far?”.
Speaking on his aspiration, the senatorial candidate said his party is poised to unseat the ruling party, pointing out that the GPN “is the only focused party and has ceded 80 percent of its slot to the youths.”
“To us in Green Party of Nigeria, those borgus salaries that are collecting is going straight to the grassroots. We have an agreement which is first of its kind. We have a signed agreement that as a member of National Assembly, you have to remove 20 percent of the salary while other go into all development of the grassroots,” the Senatorial candidate said.
He continued, “As far as Ogun State is concerned, GPN is taking over. We are taking over because out of over 60 political parties in Nigeria, GPN is the only party that’s focussed and give 80 percent chance to the youth without paying a dim for the nomination form. So, GPN is fully set and committed to take over. Let me state categorically that in 2019 youths are taking over.
“We are telling the old cargos to quit the stage for younger generation. If by 2019, as Green Party of Nigeria senatorial candidate, I defeat the older candidates from other parties, it will bring message of hope, rehabilitation, reconciliation and reconstruction.
