The immediate, past Vice Chancellor of the Olabisi Onabanjo University, Professor Sabur Adejimi Adesanya had revealed that he had a very tough experience when he resumed as the helmsman at the University some six years ago.
Professor Adesanya who was speaking at a reception organized by the Association of Egba Descendants, Ijebuland, ASSED, at the Centenary Hall, Ake Abeokuta, recalled that the early period of his tenure was characterized by non cooperation by some people, as a result of which he decided to let go.
He explained further that when he came to formally inform the Alake and Paramount Ruler of Egbaland, His Majesty Oba Adedotun Gbadebo, CFR, the he should not resign because he had all the qualities of a consummate and dexterous leader to weather such Administrative Storms and rebrand the Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ago Iwoye.
Professor Adesanya said he would ever be grateful to the Alake for his “rearming him to rebrand that University which according to him was almost in comatose to the extent that not many lecturers and students were willing to make the tertiary institution their first, second or even third choice.
Some of the rebranding was correction of the National University Commission’s impression that the University was running curriculum, not better than those of a secondary school, leading to the accreditation of many disciplines. Not only this Commander Ebenezer Obey was brought in as a Professor of Music and was acknowledged by the NUC and this even laundered the image of the institution.
He also thanked Professor Afolabi Soyode, one of his earlier predecessors whose handling over notes he revisited and found very inspiring.
He urged the Association of Egba Descendants of Ijebuland, to continue their cooperation and support for any administration of the varsity for the benefit of all.
Professor Adesanya said he would not forget the tremendous support of the State Governor, Senator Ibikunle Amosun for the institution structurally and financially adding that the Governor was always there for him.
In his remarks, a former Vice Chancellor, Professor Afolabi Soyode said that Professor Sabur Adesanya should be celebrated because of his giant strides in both the academic and Human Resources. He noted that his tenure was characterized by achievements that would stand the test of time.
Among other dignitaries present at the occasion were the Oluwo of Oke Ona Egba, Dr (Chief) Taiwo Jiboku, Dr (Chief) Tunji Sotoyinbo, Prince Ademola, Oba Femi Taylor, Oba Otunba , Baagbimo and Aare Baaroyin of Egbaland.
