Oba Sikiru Adeyiga

IJEBU – The Oba of Irolu-Remo Kingdom, Oba Sikiru Ajibowu Adeyiga, has urged monarchs to desist from endorsing politicians ahead of the 2019 general election, urging traditional rulers to remain neutral and abstain from any acts that can mar their reputation and threaten the peace of their domain and the nation at large.

As the custodian of the culture and tradition of their people, the monarch advised traditional rulers to see themselves as fathers to all regardless of political parties and ethnicity.

The monarch gave the advice at the weekend at his palace in Irolu-Remo, Ogun State during a chat with newsmen ahead of his 80th birthday celebration holding on Saturday, December 22, at the community’s playground.

The octogenarian, who noted that the celebration would be the first in his lifetime, said his birthday is coming on the heels of his recovery from a severe illness that left him in coma for two days earlier this year.

“Since I was born, I have never been to the hospital as a result of illness but in March, I was struck with an illness that left me in coma for two days. So this birthday is a thanksgiving to God for the miraculous survival,” he said.

The monarch added that his 80th birthday will also mark his 26 years on the throne as the king of the kingdom and admitted that the challenge is not an easy one but thank God for the journey so far.

He further advised politicians to live up to their campaign promises as enshrined in their manifesto. According to him, there was a deep gulf between the present crop of politicians and the first republic politicians, recounting the good deeds of Chief Obafemi Owolowo, the former premier of old western region, whose legacy lives on till date.
