MRS. ABIODUN ADVOCATES SUPPORT FOR FREE CANCER SCREENING

Wife of Ogun State Governor, Mrs. Bamidele Abiodun has called for involvement of private organisations and well-meaning individuals, to support free breast and cervical cancer screening for women in the State, to further encourage them to know their cancer status.

Mrs. Abiodun made this known at the flag-off of Free Cancer Screening and Awareness Month programme, at Oba Ademola Maternity Hospital, Ijemo, Abeokuta, noting that the gesture would make more women come forward for the test.

She described breast and cervical cancer as the two greatest forms of cancer that had claimed the lives of many women, saying it is pathetic to record death cases that could be prevented through early detection and treatment.

“We will appreciate the private sector, government and other stakeholder’s support through enlightenment on what cancer entails, while offering access to screening to save more lives and prevent cancer deaths. Our women should take advantage of this programme to actually know their status’’, she said.

In her opening remarks, the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Tomi Coker reiterated the government’s commitment to health care of women in the State, saying her ministry would not relent in promoting projects and programmes that would translate to sound health of the people.

The resource person, a Consultant Gynecologist, Federal Medical Center, Idi-Aba, Dr. Aminat Ahmed in her presentation, identified cervical and breast cancer as the most prevalent kinds of cancer in our society, noting that early detection remained key to successful treatment of the ailment.

Partners present at the event were, Medical Women Association of Nigeria, Ajose Foundation, Sebeccly Cancer Care, Monitor Health Care and Optimal Cancer Care, among others.
