National Youth Games: Journalists Barred From Screening Exercise


ABEOKUTA – A mild drama occurred on Wednesday as Sports Writers in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital were prevented from covering the screening exercise of the ongoing Zonal Elimination Competition of the National Youth Games.

The Screening Committee barred journalists mostly from Osun and Ogun States who were SWAN members from gaining access to the Squash court of the Alake Sports Centre in Abeokuta venue of the screening exercise.

When contacted on the development, The Zonal Coordinator, National Sports Commission (South West), Mr. Femi Ajao explained that, the presence of journalists was not needed in the screening auditorium, saying only the athletes and screening committee would be only allowed.

Mr. Ajao said, “We don’t need you, and I don’t want to speak on it. There’s no provision for media coverage. In fact, I don’t want to talk to the press, if there’s any problem, go and meet the host state, I can’t talk to you “.

Meanwhile, coaches who spoke with our reporters lamented on the poor preparation and mass disqualification of their athletes.

The coaches expressed dissatisfaction over the screening exercise, describing it as “unfortunate and barbaric “.
