The Alake and Paramount ruler of Egbaland, Oba Adedotun Aremu Gbadebo has called on all newly appointed Coronet Traditional Rulers , not to engage themselves in selling of other people’s land.
Oba Gbadebo gave the warning while speaking at the Seminar organized to brief the new Coronet Obas at the Ake Palace on Tuesday 27 May.
The Alake advised the obas, not to do anything that would bring the institution of Obaship into disrepute.
He explained that in case of Community land, there must be a consensus among all the stakeholders to ensure unity and peace.
In the case of cultural worship, the Obas should pursue what is satisfactory to their faith.
The Alake enjoined all the participants to take good advantage of the Seminar engender people oriented community leadership in their areas.
The Principal Speaker at the Seminar, Deputy Director/Area Manager, Industrial Training Fund, Abeokuta Area Office, Mrs Funmi Coker, advised the new Obas to make sure they are accessible to the people they represent.
She pointed out that therefore they must automatically live up to the new status and as newly appointed Obas, they should fully realize who they were and what they are now.
She said that their way of dressing, talking, eating and general behaviour would describe what they are.
She admonished them to always remember that they must not be ordinary again and they must know the tradition and culture of their people and should be abreast of the protocol.
Mrs. Coker also warned them to refrain from physical contacts, like hugging, kissing, handshaking and loud banters in public. No more fighting or struggling for anything in public such as souvenirs.
She further added that to be a successful ruler, they had to understand the tradition and culture of their people and communicate with them clearly.
