KATSINA – The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), Katsina State command, has apprehended suspected human trafficker and rescued three Euro-bound victims with him along Kano-Katsina Road, en route Niger Republic.
The Comptroller of Immigration in Katsina, Joshua Olusola Ajisafe, who made this known to newsmen in Katsina, said the suspects were nabbed by immigration operatives at Charanchi Patrol base, one of the hinterland checkpoints, at about 1.40am last Tuesday.
Ajisafe said the suspected trafficker, Monday Adeoye Olampekun, 49, a frequent traveller between Nigeria and Niger Republic with an ECOWAS Travel Certificate, reportedly collected N30, 000 from the agent of his female victim, Okafor Jovita, 28, to facilitate her trip to the neighbouring country and connect her with someone in that country who would facilitate her onward trip to Europe.
According to him, the Olampekun also requested the other victims, Anyanwu Victor Udochukwu, 33, and Alajide, 26, to pay the sum of N160, 000 as part payment which they complied with before he ran out of luck following intelligence report.
The Comptroller, who assured that the men and the lady would be handed over to the Immigration Service headquarters for further investigation, stated that checks showed that Olampekun had been in the nefarious business based on his (the suspect’s) links with peoples within and outside the country.
He attributed the arrest of suspects to assistance from the newly commissioned 30-man- forward operational base with modern communication gadgets in the state for officers to track down traffickers at land borders and boost officers’ morale to work round the clock.
