NITP Boss Seeks Transformation In Housing Provision Through Proper Town and City Planning

The National President of the Nigerian Institute of Town Planners, Tpl Olutoyin A. Ayinde, has advocated for proper City planning for Nigerian States to bring about sanity and engender affordable houses for the citizens.

Tpl Ayinde said this while addressing the Alake’s Regency Committee at the Ake Palace on Tuesday, 24, August, 2021.

Emphasising the need for official approval of Town planning by the appropriate authorities, he reiterated that a City plan must be drawn first before building approval of houses, adding that the absence of this is one of the causes of rampant demolition of houses and unorganised housing arrangements.

Tpl Ayinde, a former Commissioner to former Governor Fashola in Lagos State said that in other developed countries houses are properly planned and well arranged resulting in buildings having the same height and shapes in each estates.

He added that because the government had provided public housing scheme for its citizens, no one goes to buy cement or building materials for themselves, saying the houses are well catered by the government.

This, he said, was not the case in Nigeria as prospective home owners do so on individual basis, saying that citizens buy lands and build anyhow according to their financial capabilities.

Tpl Ayinde further disclosed that there were so many dangers attached to the way houses are built without proper planning in Nigeria.

This, he said necessitated his nationwide tour to states on sensitisstion of the need for proper Town planning which births building approvals.

Besides, his choice of the visit to the Ake Palace was informed by the rile of the traditional institution as the closest to the people and an avenue for feedbacks to the government on the needs of the citizens.

The NITP National President disclosed that the government had failed over the years to explain the roles of Nigerian Urban and Regional Planning law.

He charged appropriate authorities to do the needful to enhance smooth and proper town planning for the better future of Nigerian States.

Tpl Ayinde, who was in Ogun State on Monday through Tuesday, said the the team’s next point of visit was Oyo State, having earlier visited 15 States on his mission to sensitise and enlighten Nigerians on Proper Town Planning.

Speaking in his meeting with Governor Dapo Abiodun on Monday, he lauded the government for putting in place laudable plans towards proper town planning and affordable housing scheme for its citizens.

He commended the Governor and his cabinet, adding that they still needed more sustainability and support.

Besides, he appealed to the citizens to cooperate with the government to make their programme for a better Nigeria.

In his response, the Chairman of the Regency Committee, Chief Samuel Tanimowo, who is also the Oluwo Ake, thanked the delegation for deeming it fit to visit the Alake’s Palace.

Chief Tanimowo lamented that houses still exists in slums as people live in unpleasant conditions regarded as their ancestral homes.

He further appreciated the Ogun State Government for creating housing estates for the people.

He also thanked the NITP National President and his team for their mission on the way forward, adding that the Alake would grant them full support.

The NITP National President in a special interview with Newsflagship reporters at Ake Palace disclosed that Nigeria had not fully engaged in physical planning which is the planning of settlements.

According to him, the physical planning was not given the required attention, rather, Nigerian government concentrated mostly on building plan approval, which was supposed to be a result of physical planning.

He said because we were not conducting the required research and studies, most of our settlements were ending up in chaos.

He disclosed that the mission had taken him to the entire South-East except Anambra, also South-South except Edo and Delta.

“By September, we hope to have done 20 States and the remaining 16 States would be after October when we will have our National Conference.”

“Our National Conference is also another opportunity for us to reach government.” He said.

“We have reached all Governors of States we have visited and created awareness for our plight.” He added.

“We also engage people through Radio Programmes and Press Conferences. So, we believe that if we intensify this, governments would begin to do what is right.”

Speaking about demolition of houses when it comes to proper restructuring of the Nigerian Societies, Tpl Ayinde said it is not the ideal.

“What I tell people is that, we show you where you are, we show you where you are supposed to be, and then you’ll take a decision.”
