The Alake and Paramount Ruler of Egbaland, Oba Adedotun Aremu Gbadebo, has commended the Federal Government for accepting and implementing his strategic call that the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) be armed like the Police to make the paramilitary more effective and responsive to its formation.
Oba Gbadebo made the commendation during a courtesy visit to Ake Palace by the new Ogun State NSCDC Commandant, Commandant Kolawole Rauf Taiwo.
Alake also argued that the assignment given to the Corps was very vital for the survival of Nigeria’s economy and internal security.
He expressed satisfaction that the Corps had been performing maximally since it had been kitted to fight crime and criminals.
The Alake also called on the Federal Government to complement the operation of the Police, which the Egba Prime Monarch said was under-recruited, with bigger recruitment.
Besides, he called on the government to equally do justifiable and better recruitment into the Police for internal stability of our nation.
Oba Gbadebo commended the role played by the corps in reducing drastically the incidents of pipeline vandalism.
He recalled the important roles played by two Egba sons that had been in the forefront of the formation and arming of the Civil Defence Corps in persons of former President Olusegun Obasanjo and Dr. Olu Abolurin.
He said that Corps have shown that the Civl Defence was a veritable complement to other security services, adding that that it was a “best complement” to other security services.
In his speech, the new Commandant of the NSCDC, Commandant Rauf Taiwo, said the Civil Defence started in Abeokuta.
He expressed happiness on his new posting to Abeokuta and acknowledged the vital roles of Traditional Rulers as navigators of their respective communities, adding that his call was to receive royal blessings.
He said his Commandant General had launched Female Corps and he himself would soon launch the Ogun State Chapter.
“Ogun State had over 700 kilometres of pipeline vandalism.
As Ogun is between Ibadan and Lagos, Civil Defence had a lot of job to do.” He said
Besides, he enlightened the Alake that Civil Defence is also into crises management such as fire, flood and gas incidence, adding that the Corps is also on top of the situation as well as illegal mining.
“It also registers private security services.” He added.
He further called for the cooperation of Traditional Rulers.
Egba High Chiefs at the occasion were the Aare Baaroyin, Layi Labode and Asiwaju Baamofin Sunday Rotimi Oduntan.
