LAGOS- Some Stakeholders and members of the Lagos State chapter of National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) have urged the State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu and other political leaders in the state to quickly move to stop what they tagged as “imminent uncontrollable bloody and civil unrest by some disgruntled members’, towards the forthcoming union’s election.
The concerned members of the union who spoke with some journalists in Lagos recently, alleged that the State Treasurer of the union, Musiliu Akinsanya otherwise known as MC Oluomo is making move to impose himself as the next chairman of the body following the elevation of Tajudeen Agbede, as the National Vice Chairman of the body.
They said the attempt by the current state treasurer to impose himself as the chairman of the union in the state may lead to anarchy and civil unrest among the members of the union and by extensions and the state at large.
To avoid what they termed as ‘imminent uncontrollable bloody and civil unrest in the state’, the stakeholders and opinion leaders called on Oluomo to respect the union’s constitution and the zoning system arrangement made by the parties.
The group who did not want their names mentioned said: “some people wanted to force themselves to occupy the key position of the union within Lagos State for their selfish gains and personal aggrandisement.
“Now that the Lagos State Chairman of NURTW has now been appointed as the National Vice President of the Association, the position of both the State Chairman, the treasurer and other Officer has become vacant and in strict compliance with the Constitution of the Union and in other to give room for fair play, equity, justice and even distribution of positions within the Union, it has been generally resolved that the Constitution of the union must be adhere to in appointing officers to all positions in the union.
“In achieving this and to give peace a chance, Constitutionality, Lagos State had been Zone into three Senatorial District namely, Lagos West, Lagos East and Lagos Central.
“Currently, both the Chairman and the Treasurer of the Union came from Lagos West Senatorial District and this position had remain same for the past eight years, hence in strict compliance with the Constitution, both the position of the state Chairman and Treasurer should go to another Senatorial District who had not had this same opportunity”.
According to the members, “this laudable arrangement did not go down well with some members, some of who had been in the positions for more than eight years. These people have been planning to cause serious problem within the union that if not checked on time may lead to complete breakdown of law and order, wanton destruction of lives and property, uncontrollable pandemonium and complete state of anarchy”, they warned.
The NURTW members further claimed: “An impeccable source, very close to MC Oluomo, also informed us that the plan currently being embarked upon by Oluomo to force himself on the union, boasting that he has the blessing of Asiwaju Tinubu, the current Governor of Lagos State, Babatunde Sanwo-Olu and the newly appointed National Chairman of NURTW”.
