Determined to fortify markets across the State and further safeguard the health of all residents, the Ogun State government has flagged off a disinfection exercise for all major markets in the State.

Performing the flag off at the Kuto Market in Abeokuta, Secretary to the State government, Mr. Tokunbo Talabi disclosed that the aim of the exercise, which held simultaneously across the 20 Local Government Areas of the State, was to guarantee safety of public places, which was why Government started with the markets.

 “The whole plan is to disinfect all our public areas starting from the markets and we are also covering Police Stations, Schools, High Ways, Shops, as well as Worship Centres and we are taking them in batches and will be repeated from time to time”, the SSG said.

He expressed Government’s determination in protecting its people from the dreaded Corona Virus, saying that, aside the use of sophisticated equipment for the exercise, about 900 personal have been deployed in all the four divisions of the state to ensure its success.

Assuring that the exercise would cover the nooks and crannies of the State, the State’s scribe affirmed that, “everywhere in the State, where we have population more than 20 to 50 is qualified. The biggest traffic areas are where we are starting from, we are also using the opportunity of the lockdown to disinfect schools before the children resume”.

He called on the people to complement Government’s effort by fumigating their homes, maintain social distancing, take personal hygiene seriously and whenever they suspect any case, they can call the mobile phone number; 08012345678 to report any case of Coronavirus, saying, the line could also be reached for counselling.

Speaking later during a special fumigation exercise for livestock and cattle markets in Isale-Oja section of the market, Commissioner for Agriculture, Dr. Adeola Odedina, said, ‘’we all have to confront Coronavirus, as it is a common enemy, disclosing that there was already a template to cover all the Local Governments.

“It is all inclusive, we have involved market leaders, this is a specialised decontamination by the department of Veterinary service, alongside the one we are doing generally and the chemical is specially made for places such as; markets, abattoirs, as well as, places where we keep consumables. It is safe and sound for human being but not safe for the virus “, Odedina said.

On his part, Commissioner for Environment, Hon. Abiodun Abudu-Balogun appealed to residents to support the officials when the team gets to their areas, maintaining that the chemical used were non toxic.

Permanent secretary, ministry of Agric, Dr. Dotun Sorunke, submitted that the disinfectants used were not harmful to the beds and livestock, noting that the Ministry leveraged on the previous progress of the Regional Disease Surveillance System and Avian Influenza, carried out in conjunction with the federal ministry of Agriculture for seamless exercise.


The Secretary of Kuto Market, Mr. Owoyemi Stephen, appreciated Government for the initiative, saying it would go a long way in safeguarding beds and livestock because it was handled by experts.

Other markets disinfected within Abeokuta metropolis included; Panseke, Omida and Sapon, as the Head of Service, Mrs Amope Chokor and all the  Care taker chairmen from all the Local Government Areas in the Ogun Central Senatorial District  attended the flag off.
