OGUN CHARGES NIGERIAN MUSICIANS TO PREACH AGAINST DRUG ABUSE

Ogun State government says top musicians in the country have significant role to play in eradicating the menace of drug and substance abuse amongst youths, charging them to lead the campaign against the menace.

The Chairman, Ogun State Drug Control Committee (OSDCC), Pharm. Olufemi Fafiolu gave this charge at a press briefing organized in collaboration with the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Ogun State Command, in Abeokuta, as part of activities commemorating United Nations Day Against Drug and Illegal Trafficking. 

Fafiolu said, drug abuse prevalence was currently high in the country, describing musicians as important change agents, who should use their talents and influences among youths to preach against the menace, rather than promote it. 

“It is a pity that many musicians and celebrities today celebrate drug abuse in their lyrics and videos, this ought not to be because they have great influence on their listeners. OSDCC is planning to reach out to musicians soonest, to get them to lead the campaign against drug abuse”, he said. 

In his speech, the State Commander, National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Mr. Ishaku Yusuf Kwajafa, said, as part of the  Agency’s efforts in curbing drug abuse, it has, in the past one year arrested 193 suspects, seized 7422.611kg of drugs and counselled 60 suspects, adding that 24 suspects were convicted. 

The Commander also noted that his Agency, in conjunction with OSDCC and the NYSC Drug Free Club, had carried out different campaign programmes to various schools, media houses, traditional institutions across the State, amongst others.

Mr. Ishaku appreciated the State government for its continuous support, while soliciting for resources such as; rehabilitation facilities, operational vehicles and more, he appealed to the citizens to proffer useful advice to the young ones, to properly check the menace of drug abuse.
