Sequel to the threat poised on economic cash flow by Covid-19 pandemic, the Ogun State government, under the leadership of Governor Dapo Abiodun, has responsibly rolled out measures to ease tax payment for payers.
Speaking with journalists in Abeokuta, the Director of Corporate Development in the State Internal Revenue Service, Mr. Olugbenga Akinfenwa said, cushioning the effects of the pandemic on taxpayers showed that the state government was responsive and committed to ensure economic growth.
He listed the category of beneficiaries to include; the self employed, Pay As You Earn (PAYE), as well as Pools and Betting, saying the self employed and informal sectors, who were supposed to file-in the tax returns of preceding year by March ending, have been given an extension till September 30, after which they would be penalised for late filing from October 1, 2020.
The Director explained further that the pools and betting category, who were supposed to remit every week to government coffer, were pardoned from April to June 30, 2020, after which they would be penalised.
He revealed that among the beneficiaries of these reliefs were the employers of labour, who were agents of government for adequate deduction and prompt payment of preceding year Pay As You Earn from their employees emolument by 31st January of every year, now enjoy complete waiver of interest and penalty on late remittance.
Akinfenwa urged taxpayers to take advantage of the relief by paying voluntarily before it elapsed, adding that this would help them conveniently offset their liability and equally relief the burden of payment of interest and penalties.
The Director also noted that staffers of OGIRS at all tax stations have been notified on the implementation guidelines of the palliative measures.
