ABEOKUTA – The Academic Staff Union Of Polytechnic (ASUP), has accused the Ogun State government, National Board of Technical Education (NBTE) and Joint Admission Matriculation Board (JAMB) for conspiring against the survival of Moshood Abiola Polytechnic, Abeokuta.
ASUP Zonal Coordinator, representing zone C, Mr. Olawale Omobaorun made the allegation on Monday during a press conference held at ASUP secretariat of Moshood Abiola Polytechnic, Abeokuta, Ogun State.
Omobaorun said the ‘deceitful’ accreditation by NBTE without requisite classroom and facilities threatened the existence of MAPOLY.
He argued that, the NBTE visit was for site inspection to advise the state government on the requirements for polytechnic take-off in Ipokia.
He claimed that, ASUP MAPOLY chapter had written to NBTE through its national body to re-confirm the accreditation approval as announced by Ogun State government.
He added that, failure of NBTE to debunk or affirm the state government announcement has endangered the future of both the academic and non-academic staff of the institution thereby hanging the future of the polytechnic in the balance.
Comrade Omobaorun explained that the union frowned at the state government’s policy and decisions as it affects the institution .
He stated that the state government had not been alive to her responsibility of salary payment and capital project development of the institution.
He noted that the union had submitted series of position papers and correspondence to the state government, saying that there were no response in the direction of the institution’s plight.
He said that the government was owing N76million part time allowance, 67 per cent of 10 months salary and 100 per cent of the last four months salary.
He therefore declared that, the union has embarked on “work-to-rule” strike.
It would be recalled that the union had in November embarked on similar strike due to the failure of the government to yield to their demands on ways to deal with controversies surrounding the conversion of the 38 year old polytechnic to a university.
The government also established Ogun State Polytechnic, Ipokia, a decision which had created rancour between the ASUP and the state government.
“As staffs and stakeholder’s in the polytechnic education system, ASUP , through its national body wrote to the NBTE to reconfirm the accreditation approval as announced by the state government .
” Barely a year after and up until this moment , the NBTE has refused to debunk or affirm the government announcement .
“Since JAMB knew that students were to be admitted at the new polytechnic, Ipokia, why did JAMB advertise MAPOLY in its 2018/2019 admission exercise despite its denial of student’s admission to MAPOLY during 2017/2018 session.
” ASUP challenge Ogun state government and NBTE to make known to the public the second page of the purported accreditation letter issued to the government by NBTE or technically reversed her move ,” he said.
He called on well meaning Nigerian’s to prevail on the government to do the needful by restoring the lost glory of MAPOLY.
