OGUN RAISES AWARENESS ON EYE HEALTH

The awareness of people in Ogun State has been drawn to the significance of caring for their eyes to reduce the risk of visual impairment and avoidable blindness.

The Ogun Primary Health Care Development Agency made the call during a free eye screening programme for the State’s Civil Servants, commemorating the 2019 World Sight Day, at the Ministry of Health, Oke Mosan, Abeokuta.

Speaking on the theme, “Vision First”, the Director of Primary Health Care, Dr. Salimat Sanni, charged the people to put their sight care first in their general well being and health checks.

She pointed out that Permanent Secretaries, Directors and other management staff, do not always give proper attention required to their eyes and sight based on their busy schedules, noting their importance in the execution of government’s policies and programmes.

The State Coordinator for Eye Health, Mr. Tola Aina, explained that the day was set aside by the World Health Organisation (WHO) and other international health agencies for the prevention of blindness, to create awareness on causes of blindness and visual impairment in people, warning that eye health needed to be accepted as part of their overall health.

In her contribution, the Vice Chairman, State Eye Health Committee, Mrs. Oluwatoni Onabolu, sensitize lawmakers to ensure that they prevent blindness in children in their locality through legislation, noting that there was need, encouraging everybody including children to have their eyes checked at least once a year.

The Vice Chairman, Nigerian Optometrists Association, Ogun Chapter, Dr. Uche Ejere highlighted other diseases associated with eye defects, such as, diabetes and hypertension, stressing that early diagnosis could help prevent loss of vision.

Beneficiaries at the event, Mrs. Bisola Adegboyega and Mr. Ahmed Adebayo appreciated the State Government for the free eye screening among the work force, promising to give proper attention to their sights.
