The Personal Assistance to MKO Abiola during the just de-annulled June 12 1993Presidential election period, Olu Akerele disclosed that it was unfair for some people conclude that President Buhari honoured Chief MKO ABiola for political gains.
Olu Akerele argued that the President did not do so for any undue advantage whatsoever. Rather it was for the entrenchment of constitutional democracy in the psyche of the Nigerian Political elites, the military and the civil service.
Speaking at African Independent Television, AIT Programme, Olu Akerele disclosed that he was very much aware that the son of the late business mogul, Kola Abiola had personally told him that his main assignment was to get the Federal authorities to de-annulled the 1993 presidential election which was acclaimed by the whole world as fair, free and most credible election in the history of pre and post independent in Nigeria.
Lisa Olu Akerele, a veteran journalist, disclosed that Kola Abiola confided in him that he would not rest until the mandate is freely giving to his father.
He said Abiola was recognised and all official prerequisites and entitlements be accorded him, albeit posthumously.
He disclosed that Kola said he did not make any efforts to contact the former President Olusegun Obasanjo on the matter because he felt that the latter would not do anything about it.
According to the Personal Assistant to late Chief MKO Abiola, except for Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, Kola had consistently been consulting all his succeeding Presidents, including the late Umar Musa Yar’Adua who tried to act on the matter but died before he could do anything.
Immediate past president, Goodluck Jonathan was also convinced that MKO Abiola should be hounored.
Jonathan started his own action by his unsuccessful attempt to rename the prestigious University of Lagos after MKO Abiola and would have perhaps followed that up with de-annulment of June 12 Presidential election.
Akerele further disclosed that Kola succeeded in this last attempt with the full cooperation and collaboration with Asiwaju Bola Ahamed Tinubu and both succeeded in convincing President Muhammadu Buhari without much problem.
President Muhammadu Buhari, in his reaction, affirmatively declared that his administration was for justice, fair play and genuine reconciliation with a view to healing all the political and social wounds of 1993 Presidential election.
Lisa Akerele commended Buhari for his action which he said portrayed the President as a man of uncommon courage, integrity and justice.
The Governor of Ogun State, Senator Ibikunle Amosun, was also said to have played some strategic roles in actualizing Kola’s project by ensuring that MKO Abiola children and relatives coordinated their efforts so that their father, the winner of June 12 election 1993 mandate freely given by Nigerians, would be recognised and honoured as the winner of that presidential election.
