NASARAWA – Members of the National Association of Proprietors of Private Schools (NAPPS), Karu Chapter in Nasarawa State have organised a protest against what they termed multiple and outrageous taxes by the Karu Local Government Council authorities .

They also condemned the court order which authorised the closure of defaulting schools since November 2018.

The school owners came out in hundreds demanding a reduction in the various payments imposed on them by the council.

They carried placards , some of which read ‘Samuel Akala: No to double taxation; No to intimidation; No to inhumanity, Increment of School establishment cost from 90,000 to 650,000 and annual renewal from 25,000 to 90,000 is dehumanisation’.

Addressing the protester’s , the General Secretary of NAPPS , Karu Branch , Olu Kayode said that the N288, 000 amount bring demanded by the council has brought about a financial burden on them.

“We express our solidarity to you concerning the inconveniences , harassment and embarrassment caused by putting our schools, over a thousand under lock and key since November 2018,” he said.

“Fellow members , it appears our business interests are targeted to rubbish, collapse and send us parking out of Nassarawa State. ”

Also speaking, the chairperson , Karu NAPPS , Mrs. Mary Bassey stated that the council authority has remained adamant to their pleas for a reduction in the charges.

She said the actions of the council could lead to closure of some schools and also affect the standard of education in the Area .

National Council member , NAPPS North -Central zone , Charles Umekwe who attended the rally urged the Council chairman to sit down with the school owners and find an amicable solution to the crisis in the interest of affected pupils .

He said the schools can not afford to be paying another operational permit after paying to the Nasarawa State Government.

In his reaction, the council chairman , Hon. Samuel Akala Gajere said the council was constitutionally empowered to collect certain taxes.

The council boss stated further that his administration has initiated plans to regulate tax administration in the area.

He urged the school owners to comply with the new tax administration in the area.
