The Alake of Egbaland, Oba Adedotun Gbadebo, has again solicited for paramilitary personnel to carry arms in cause of their security duties.
Oba Adedotun Gbadebo, who made the call while receiving the Zonal Commanding Officer of the Federal Road Safety Corps for Lagos and Ogun; ACM Samuel A. Obayemi, argued that it was high time the National Assembly and Federal Government approved carrying arms to be all time effective on on duty.
The Alake noted that the Road Safety Corps officers, like their counterparts in Civil Defence, Customs, Immigration as well as those belonging to States, could hardly perform optimally, if criminals and others causing law infractions, were armed and capable of killing or maiming these defenceless officers.
The Alake however thanked the Federal authorities for finally accepting his campaign for the Civil Defence to carry arms while on duty adding that this had greatly improved its effectiveness in fighting vandalism, kidnapping, and other allied criminal activities in Nigeria.
On the performance of the Corps in Ogun State, the Alake commended ACM Obayemi and his men for their excellent and professional service in reducing accidents and deaths on the roads, especially during festive periods.
While praising their regular information and education of the public on media and at town hall meetings, Oba Gbadebo, advised them to open Complaints Telephone Lines in their offices.
Speaking earlier, the Zonal Commanding Officer; ACM Samuel Obayemi told the Alake that he was in quarterly tour of FRSC Command In Ogun and Lagos state to access and update himself on the performance of the sectors.
He disclosed that only 11 out of the 20 Local Governments of Ogun State were fully covered by the FRSC, adding that the remaining 9 would soon be provided with road safety operatives.
He lamented that despite intensive media and face to face education and orientation of motorists in Lagos and Ogun State, the level of cooperation from motorists especially those operating articulate and commercial vehicles was still low.
ACM Obayemi therefore appealed to the Alake and other traditional rulers to support the campaign for the best route usage practices.
He also noted Alake‘s support for the Corps in reducing road accidents on Abeokuta-Kobape road, adding that the Egba Monarch should sustain his assistance in eradicating road accidents in Nigeria
He then appealed to both commercial and private drivers not to be afraid of the officers of the frsc but to walk close with them
