Ogun State Government and Managers of football clubs have been advised by stakeholders in the football business to look inward with sincerity of purpose for soccer to thrive in the State.

Giving the advice at the 2019 Stakeholders’ Forum of Gateway United Football Club (GUFC), held at the Moshood Abiola International Stadium, Kuto, Abeokuta, the club was enjoined to take its rightful place in the country and avoid external influences, while calling for the enactment of a procedural law.

In his submission, Special Adviser to the Governor on Job Creation and Youth Empowerment, Hon. Lekan Olude, revealed that the present administration was very passionate about sport development and would ensure revamping all sporting infrastructures across the State.

The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Youth and Sport, Mr. Kolawole Fagbohun, who maintained that Government alone could not shoulder sporting activities, advocated for alternative sources of funding for the Club, advising its leadership to expand its fans’ base by making Civil Servants key into the programmes through purchase of souvenirs and attending matches.

The Chairman of the event and Proprietor, Remo Stars Football Club of Sagamu, Mr. Kunle Soname, pledged to rehabilitate some facilities, assist the club with some players, canvass for capacity development of young players and ensure synergy between Gateway United Football Club and other Football Clubs.

Dignitaries at the forum included; former Commissioners of Youth and Sport in the State Mr. Bukola Olopade and Mr. Afolabi Afuape, Hon. Justice Soremi (Rtd), former Nigeria Goalkeeper, Ike Shorunmu, a member of the State House of Assembly, Hon. Abdul Oladunjoye, retired Permanent Secretaries in the Ministry, among others.
