SUSPECTED CASE OF COVID-19 AT NEUROPSYCHIATRIC HOSPITAL, ARO, ABEOKUTA DECLARED AS FALSE NEWS

The Aro Neuro Psychiatric Hospital, Abeokuta has said in a press release disclosed to a Newsflagship reporter on Tuesday, that a suspected case of the Corona Virus Infection Disease (COVID-19) patient was spotted at the General Medical Practice Unit (formerly called NHIS Staff/Community Clinic) on Monday 23rd March, 2020 was false news.

The Management of Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Aro, Abeokuta, under the able leadership of the Acting Provost and Medical Director, Dr. Lucky Onofa, issued the press release, which was announced by Mr Joseph O. Abiola Ajibola, the Public Relations Officer, to debunk the fake news making round majorly on social media and other media platforms.

The press release read that “It is on record, according to a medical report released by Dr. Akingunola, the Consultant Family Physician In Charge of General Medical Practice Unit who is also the Chairman of the Infection Prevention and Control Committee of the Hospital that a 23 year old Industrial Staff who came in from Lagos to his sister in Abeokuta yesterday Sunday 22nd March, 2020, visited the Hospital facility for treatment.”

“The said young man according to Dr. Akingunola presented himself for treatment this morning Monday 23rd March, 2020 at the Hospital’s General Medical Practice Unit with the history of fever and occasional cough. There was no sneezing, nasal discharge or difficult respiration.” It added.

The Consultant Family Physician stated further that the patient neither travelled out of Nigeria nor had contact with anyone who travelled. Also, Dr. Akingunola stated that the patient have not had any previous visit to any hospital or contact with anyone suspected or confirmed for COVID-19 during assessment at the Unit.

Dr. Akingunola also stated in his report that the young man was seen, treated and sent home for medical ailment and not for suspected COVID-19. He was given appointment to come back for medical checkup.

He added that all media organizations and the general public should note it that Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Aro, Abeokuta has put in place measures to prevent the spread of COVID-19 within the main complex of the Hospital at Aro and its Annex at Lantoro, Abeokuta and will not delay in reporting any suspected case of COVID-19 to relevant authorities controlling the spread of the pandemic in Ogun State.
