The leadership of the Traditionalists and Herbalists Association of Nigeria has accepted to play active role in the take-off of “Operation Amotekun”, by providing traditional hunters in a new joint security outfit designed to aid the police in ridding the South-West of kidnapping, robberies and other criminal activities currently on the increase.
Already, the South-West governors who mooted the idea of forming a complementary security outfit in the wake of recurring kidnap-for-ransom being perpetrated by some hoodlums on the highways, have also succeeded in enlisting the support of the Yoruba native militia group, the O’dua People’s Congress (OPC).
Speaking with our correspondent, the National Secretary of the Traditionalists and Herbalists Association of Nigeria, Chief Fayemi Fakayode, said Nigerian traditionalists and herbalists across the board had agree to assist security agents in neutralizing the debilitating effects of charms, amulets and other hypnotic devices being deployed by criminals to attack their targets.
“We are happy that both the police and the government itself have come to the full realisation that apart from lethal weapons like guns, knives and cutlasses being used by these criminals, they also use some charms and chant incantations to disarm their targets and dispossess them.
“In our association, we will appeal to higher authorities spiritually, and neutralise the negative effects of the charms of these criminals,” Fakayode assured.
He particularly thanked the South-West governors for backing up the joint security initiative of “Operation Amotekun”, saying that soon, members of the public would notice positive changes in the security situations on the highways and in the neighbourhoods.
It would be recalled that the joint security outfit was conceived in July, this year, owing to the worsening security situation in the South-West region.
“Operation Amotekun, according to findings, was actually muted by the Development Agenda for Western Nigeria (DAWN) Commission, in concert with the six South-West governors.
It is however expected that each of the six states will donate at least 20 operational vehicles and other logistic supports to make “Operation Amotekun” effective.
The police arm of the operation is to be headed by an assistant commissioner of police, while the OPC and herbalists cum traditionalists are expected to support through native intelligence and supernatural prowess.
