The Alake and Paramount Ruler of Egbaland, Oba Adedotun Aremu Gbadebo, CFR, Okukenu IV, has urged the Abeokuta Club to continuously take care of the elderly citizens by creating recreational and relaxation facilities for them.
The Grand Patron of the Cultural Club made the remarks while speaking at the 46th Annual President’s Party, held at the Millennium Hall of the Club on Sunday 11 April 2021.
Oba Adedotun Gbadebo said the Club could only fulfill its obligations by putting in place facilities that would make both the older generation, that founded the Club and the younger, to enjoy themselves and have prolonged life.
Alake added that provisions should be made to enable the elderly people to relax, eat, and have a good peaceful time with friends and colleagues.
Oba Gbadebo also congratulated the Club President, Engr Tokunbo Odebunmi, for another successful President Party of Abeokuta Club, adding that his tenure had been fruitful and would continue to be more fruitful and prosperous.
The Alake further commended the new Trustee of Abeokuta Club, and former two time President of Nigeria, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, GCFR, for his tremendous contributions towards the development of Ogun State and by extension, the Nigerian Federation.
As a Monarch who is always concerned about the absolute well being and comfort of his people, Oba Gbadebo also enjoined all Egbas present at the occasion to contribute to the development of the Millennium Hall, Abeokuta Club, which he said was incomplete without a cooling system.
Oba Adedotun Gbadebo led with a good example by donating the first Air-conditioner for the Millennium Hall.
Alake’s call was put into immediate action, prompting donations of ten giant air-conditioners from Egba Patriots.
Speaking also, the Balogun of Owu, a founding member of the Club and Vice Patron, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, recalled that the Club was founded to make things better for Egbaland, because some things were not going smoothly then.
Obasanjo commended Egba sons who were in Lagos and diaspora, for thinking of doing something lift Egbaland and this led to the successful creation of the Club.
He described the founding of the Club as an accomplishment of a great mission, which is worthy of appreciation.
Chief Obasanjo also appreciated the Grand Patron, the President, Members of the Board of Trustees, and all others for the special Honour bestowed upon him as Trustee of the Abeokuta Club.
He further stated that Abeokuta sons and daughters had been making waves all over the world and he was proud to be a part of the Egba Nation.
“We have great heritage and we should be proud of our heritage.” He said.
Obasanjo also pledged to continue to contribute to the development and growth of Abeokuta Club, and by extension development of Ogun and Nigeria as a whole.
While presenting an Award to the Alake as the Grand Patron of the Club, Chief Obasanjo lauded the commendable administration and leadership of the Egba Apex Monarch, stating that Egba had been most blessed to have Oba Gbadebo as her Monarch.
Also presenting an award to the Patron of the Abeokuta Club, Oba Saburee Babajide Bakre, the Agura of Gbaguraland, Chief Obasanjo noted that he had been a quintessential Monarch and who would continue to bring development to Gbagura and Egbaland as a whole.
In his address, the Abeokuta Club President, Engr Tokunbo Odebunmi, who is also the Onimoero of Egbaland, appreciated all executives and members of the Club for their love and support.
Engr Odebunmi also stated that the Socio-Cultural Egba Club which had been in existence since 1972 had always and would always recognise and laud Egbas who commit themselves to development of their Communities, and by extension, the State and the Country in general.
He said it was for this reason that the Club also conferred a posthumous award to the family of Late Chief M.K.O. Abiola, GCFR, the founding Treasurer of the Club, as Vice Patron of the Club, as well as the investiture of Chief Olusegun Obasanjo as Trustee, a symbol of honorary recognition.
Several awards were further given to long term committed members and elders including the Olu Ibara of Ibara – Oba Olufemi Jacob as Patron of the Club, Sir Kesington Adebutu as an Honorary Member of the Club, Hon Justice Bode Popoola as Life Vice President , Hon Justice Ademola Bakre as Life-Vice and Trustee of the Club, among others.
