The Federal Government may revisit the cancellation of Management Science Courses at the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta, FUNAAB.
The Vice President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo, assured the Alake and Paramount Ruler of Egbaland, Oba Adedotun Gbadebo, during the Vice President’s courtesy visit to the Alake last weekend.
Professor Osinbajo was reacting to the appeal by the Alake that the authorities of the Ministries of Agriculture and Education should be stopped from closing down Management Courses at the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta.
Professor Osinbajo promised that he would personally contact the Minister of Education Professor Adamu Adamu and his Agriculture counterpart, Chief Audu Ogbe on the issue.
He explained further that the Minister of Agriculture, Chief Audu Ogbe, had argued that the specialised Universities of Agriculture were abandoning Agriculture as their main course for other disciplines.
He however reassured the Alake that the Monarch’s strong submission for the restoration of the courses, required reconsideration and new actions.
Earlier in his welcome address, the Alake had raised the issue of Management Course being phased out at the Federal University of Agriculture, appealing to the Vice President to use his offices in reinstating those courses.
The Egba Monarch had argued that Agriculture as, a way of life, comprised other practical elements like Accounting, Marketing, Information Technology, Agro-allied Industries, Food Processing, Health Sciences and others, adding that there were no evidences till date to show that the introduction of these vital life courses were advisedly affecting agriculture as its main discipline.
The Alake drew the attention of the Vice President to the case of the FUNAAB’s counterpart, the Federal University of Agriculture, Makurdi, which had also introduced supportive disciplines into its courses at the same time.
The Alake explained to the Vice President that, the Federal University of Agriculture, Makurdi had been waxing stronger and better in both Agriculture and other disciplines including the College of Medicine in that same Institution.
The Alake lamented that the removal of Management Sciences from the University of Agriculture, Abeokuta, would not work for the nation’s strives in maximum food production because without the combination of Agriculture and concomitant subjects, it would be difficult for Nigeria to achieve food sufficiency for survival.
Oba Gbadebo therefore pleaded with Professor Osinbajo to specially and directly intercede in the restoration of the Management Science Courses being phased out by the authorities through contacts with the Federal Ministry of Education, the National University Commission and the Federal Ministry of Agriculture with a view to convincing them that for food sufficiency, agriculture as a discipline must be accompanied by Management Courses.
