The Odu’a People’s Congress has called on the Alake and Paramount Ruler of Egbaland, Oba Adedotun Aremu Gbadebo to quickly intervene in the communication gap between Yoruba security groups and Yoruba States Governments, over what it described, as growing insecurity in the Yoruba speaking States of the nation.
Making the call 14th of June, 2022 at the Ake Palace, the current President of the Fasheun Faction of the Odu’a People’s Congress, Alhaji Wasiu Afolabi, disclosed to the Egba Apex Monarch that, the Alake intercession had become very urgent in view of the increase in the kidnapping, terror attacks, cultism and axemen’s destruction of farm lands in Yoruba land.
Alhaji Afolabi added that, the Odu’a People’s Congress and other Yoruba voluntary Local Security Groups could not intervene in security breaches again because the State Governments had not been giving them official backing.
The OPC leader explained further that, many security measures could be put in place to protect Yoruba land and its environs against bandits and other social criminals, adding that this could not be done because the Yoruba States Governors had not been giving them necessary backing for their patriotic act.
He recalled that their men had sometimes been punished for their voluntary exercises whereas criminals would go free.
Alhaji Wasiu Afolabi also disclosed that, they were seizing the opportunity of the investiture of OPC Governor in Abeokuta to pay a courtesy call on the Egba Paramount Ruler as one of the most respectable Yoruba and Nigerian Monarchs as well as asking him for support and intervention with SoutjWest Governors , in ensuring a well-built security architecture was put in place in all Yoruba States.
In his response, the Egba Grand Monarch, Oba Adedotun Gbadebo commended the organisation’s patriotism and commitment especially during the leadership of the Chairman and Founder, Dr. Fasheun, to the welfare and security of the Yoruba nation.
Oba Adedotun Gbadebo noted that the local security networks could be very effective if their operations and conducts were well coordinated by government.
The Alake recalled that the National Security and Civil Defense Corps (NSCDC), was a local voluntary security organisation which was later accepted and adopted by the Federal Government as one of its security outfits.
Oba Gbadebo therefore hoped and prayed that the OPC and other useful voluntary organizations would be adopted and converted into government security agency as it would add more value to the already existing security arrangement of the country.
The Alake however warned the OPC to always hand over suspected criminals and other antisocial elements to the Police for thorough investigation and prosecution instead of giving judgement on the spot.
Many OPC Leaders from Yoruba land who had come to Abeokuta for the installation of the new OPC Governor, and other Officers joined the OPC President, Mr. Afolabi in paying the courtesy call to the Alake.
They included, National Coordinator Alhaji Kareem Lawal, General Secretary Comrade Olubunmi Fasheun, National Treasurer Comrade Ademola Oresanya, National Org Secretary Comrade Kareem Ibrahim and National P.R.O Comrade Babatunde Thompson
Oba Moshood Adebayo, Chief Kebinde Sofenw, Alhaji Layi Labode were among those present at the occasion.
