The Chairman, National Population Commission (NPC) Ogun State, Mrs. Yeye Oluwaseyi Aderinokun Olusanya has disclosed that they had been able to engaged thousands of youth in preparation for the population census which would be conducted in 2023.
Mrs. Olusanya made this known, during the commission’s visit to the former president of the Republic of Nigeria, Olusegun Obasanjo at his presidential library, OOPL, on Monday, 25th of July, 2022.
In an interview with Newsflagship Correspondent, the NPC Boss, Ogun State, disclosed that, she was glad about the trial census because they had been able to engage thousands of Nigerian youths.
She explained that, they had been able to engage over a thousand of youths in Ogun State which they had kept out of the street, for over a month and they were being paid handsomely, adding that, the names of these individuals were all in their database.
The NPC Chairman added that, when it’s time for employment, those that took part in the exercise would be the first to be considered, because they already had the experience and knowledge about the sample census taken and would be able to impact it on those that would be engaged later.
Mrs Olusanya further told Newsflagship online newspaper that, she was honoured that only Ogun State was chosen out of all the States in the South-West of Nigeria. She added that, the reason was that the Local Government chosen has its own peculiarities and its very close to the border, and also telecommunication networks.
She recalled that, the just concluded exercise was a trial census, which didn’t have to be perfect, noting, they just went there to test their methodology, equipments, to find out the challenges they would be facing when it was time for proper census and have them noted.
According to her, knowing the challenges helped them get prepared, most especially for trouble spot areas, which they have to go fully prepared and fully armed to be able to carry out the census properly.
She disclosed that, they had to make it known to the people in the urban area, so they could have the insight about the census, adding that, when it’s time for the exercise, they would have already known their mission and be able to cooperate with them. Both half rural and half urban areas would be covered during this coming census.
She therefore advised the good people of Nigeria and Ogun State that their cooperation was needed, they had been cooperative since the demarcation has started and they want them to continue with it.
Mrs Olusanya stated that, apart from creating youths empowerment, other gains of census was to help the government to plan for better future for youths, developments, transformation, construction of schools and apartments, etc.
