Ogun State Government has explained the reason, behind Government’s aim to reposition sports as a vocation and a means of earning a living in the State
According to the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Youth and Sports, Ogun, Engineer Olayiwola Abiodun, he noted that, engaging youths in sporting activities would go a long way, especially in attaining personal development, physical and mental buoyancy, so as to make the State proud in future sporting events.
Engineer Abiodun added that, it would discourage inter-institutional prejudice by fostering peaceful co-existence among young people from diverse backgrounds.
The Permanent Secretary reiterated that, it would also divert the youth’s mindset from venturing into criminal activities, and focused their mind on how to give their quota in the development of the country
Speaking further, he disclosed that, in the Government’s commitment in ensuring that, sports remain relevant and lucrative in the State, it had joined hands with many international sporting boards to resuscitate Gateway Tertiary Institutions Games (GATIG), which was restored last year after eight years of abandonment by the previous administration
He appreciated the State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun for his unflinching support, in the revival and success of the recent GATIG programmes
He also assured the Organisers of the game, of Government continued support.
Engineer Abiodun therefore urged the GATIG Organisers to incorporate more sporting activities into the games, as it would give the event more participation and awareness among the students.
